Why are they important?
Provisional restorations serve so many important functions. They can make or break any treatment, but especially a comprehensive fixed reconstruction.
1. They serve as a cosmetic blueprint that can be modified or approved by the patient and transferred to the lab via study cast or digital scan.
2. They serve as the occlusal blueprint that can be modified or approved by the patient and dentist and transferred to the lab via study cast or digital scan.
3. They should keep the tissue happy and healthy during treatment.
4. They give the patient confidence in themselves and YOU during treatment. More times than I can remember, I have seen patients seeking second opinions during treatment because they are in misery with their poorly made and maintained provisionals.
It is a 2 way street. Bot the dentist AND the patient are co-responsible for the outcome.
Horrible and agonizing tissue irritation due to careless behavior on the patient and dentist side. We can do better.
Excess cement and sharp untrimmed overhung areas acting as tissue spurs. We can do better.
Provisional restorations that support cosmetic, occlusal and tissue health. At this point, basically the case is all but finished. It has all been set up perfectly for the definitive work to be methodic and predictable.
